Everyday Snacks that Can Help Your Heart Health

Brookhaven Heart Health TipsWhen you are hungry, you have the opportunity to improve your heart health by making good choices when you grab a snack. We all know that healthy eating improves cardiovascular health, but there are some specific choices that you can make that can make a big difference. Brookhaven Heart has gathered a few great everyday snack choices you can keep in mind when you get the munchies.

Apples

The well-known saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” holds true once again. Apples are a great source of fiber, which can lower LDL (bad cholesterol) by slowing the oxidation of the LDL molecules. This is due to the antioxidant polyphenols that are located right in the skin of the fruit. So keep an apple handy as a great (and tasty) way to lower cholesterol and promote heart health.

Nuts and Seeds

A variety of nuts and seeds are a great option for a satisfying snack during the day. Many are full of heart-healthy protein, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They also have been shown in studies to reduce overall bad cholesterol levels and are associated with a reduced risk of death.

Green Tea

Green tea is a great drink option to go along with your snack that can help lower your LDL. Green tea is also unique in that it contains one of the most powerful antioxidants called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) that has shown to reduce LDL levels. It is best steeped with loose tealeaves to pack more of an antioxidant punch.

Dark Chocolate

Heart healthy options can be delicious and decadent! Small portions of dark chocolate can help lower your cholesterol levels thanks to phytosterols, also known as plant sterols. Enjoy a treat and know that you are making great choices for overall heart health.
