Lifestyle Habits of Super Heart Healthy People
It’s time we all became heart healthy. In the United States, there are millions of heart attack victims annually. Research has shown that over half of all heart disease deaths are due to risk factors within our control. That means lifestyle changes, including dieting and more physical activity, could reduce the risk of heart disease. Changes take time, of course. Do not be hard on yourself, but remain persistent and confident in your abilities.
Lifestyle Habits to Consider
At one point or another, we all have a terrible habit to break. Whether that habit is smoking, junk food, or sugary drinks, changes must be made. You’re not alone, though. Here are lifestyle habits of heart-healthy people:
- Avoid tobacco – Smoking-induced heart disease is a known consequence of tobacco usage, and nearly 30% of heart disease deaths are attributable to cigarette smoke.
- Managing blood pressure – Once per month, measure your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a leading cause of death across the world, and a modifiable risk factor for disease; arguably the most important one.
- Eat healthily – Swapping out cookies and cakes for vegetables, fruits, and whole grains has been shown to reduce heart disease significantly.
- Sleep – Keeping a healthy, sufficient sleeping pattern (at least 7 hours per night) contributes to lower the risk of heart disease.
- Hydration – Your body requires water to function. Increasing daily intake of water has been associated with lower risk of heart disease deaths.
Maintenance
Overall, men who do not smoke, are physically active, and have a waist circumference under 37.4 inches have an 86% lower risk of heart attack. This also means eating healthier, drinking moderately, and making lifestyle changes, too.
For women, the same healthy lifestyle lowers the chance of heart disease by 73%.
