Healthier Diet, Healthier Heart

Healthier DietYou have always heard the saying, “You are what you eat!” It is especially true when it comes to your heart. If you want a healthy heart, it starts in the kitchen. A big contributor to heart disease is obesity and unhealthy diet. Brookhaven Heart always wants our patients to know how to stay as healthy as possible. Here are a few tips on how you can improve your diet, and my default, your heart.

Eat Less

If you are overweight or obese, the best thing you can do for your health is to start a weight-loss program. Talk to a nutritionist about how to calculate your required caloric intake and how to create an adequate deficit to lose weight. In fact, studies have shown that eating less can increase your lifespan.

Eat Right

In addition to eating less, you can dramatically improve your health by eating the right things. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats will have a big impact on your heart health. Choose nutrient dense options over empty calories like soda, candy, or chips. Before eating, think about how your food choice will impact your health.

Do a Healthy Switch

A healthier diet doesn’t mean a boring one. You can still enjoy many of the types of foods you crave. However, you just have to be more creative in making it with healthier ingredients. Pizza can be healthy with a thin whole-grain crust, topped with roasted veggies and lean chicken. If you are craving something sweet, opt for some frozen yogurt topped with fruit instead of ice cream. Healthy choices should be a lifestyle change, not a temporary one.
