Chronic renal failure, also commonly referred to as chronic kidney failure, describes the gradual decrease in function in the kidneys. Your kidney is known for filtering out waste and excessive fluids from the blood, which are all then excreted through urine. With chronic renal failure, however, dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes, and waste begin to build up in the body. During the early stages of the disease, there may be few symptoms or signs. Brookhaven Heart is happy to provide information but if you believe that you may have renal issues, it is best to talk to your physician.
Symptoms
While symptoms may not immediately present themselves, worsening cases of chronic renal failure will become evident over time. You may begin to notice a few of the following symptoms developing over time:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Trouble Sleeping
- Changes in urination patterns
- Decreased mental abilities
- Muscle twitches
- Persistent itching
- Swelling in the feet and ankles
- Shortness of breath
- High blood pressure
The signs of chronic renal failure are not always specific meaning they could very well be caused by another illness or medical condition present in the body. Due to the kidneys being adaptable and capable of compensating for loss of function, some signs or symptoms will not show their face until the damage done to the organ has become irreversible.
When to See a Doctor
At the first sign of any of the aforementioned symptoms, you should contact your doctor. If you have a known medical condition that has been known to increase the risk of kidney disease, your medical practitioner may monitor your blood pressure and kidney function using comprehensive urine and blood tests during your regularly scheduled visits. You can ask whether these tests would be necessary for your needs or conditions.
